The London Sports Hall of Fame
Celebrating the past; inspiring the future.
The London Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to celebrating the past achievements and contributions of outstanding athletes, teams, coaches, builders, and community sports organizers and, in doing so, inspiring future generations.
Formed in 2002 under the umbrella organization, the London Sports Council, the Hall of Fame has a physical presence in the Budweiser Gardens and a virtual presence on our website – www.londonsportshalloffame.com. Administration is provided by the London Sports Council and the London Sports Hall of Fame committee which is responsible for the recruitment of nominations and the annual selection of inductees.
The objectives of the Hall of Fame committee are spelled out in the guidelines of the London Sports Council mandate. They include:
- preservation of “the historical sports heritage of persons connected with the City of London and Middlesex County;”
- identification of “the sports achievements of persons connected with the City of London;”
- promotion of the “study, practice, research, public interest, and knowledge of sports heritage in London;”
- “disseminating sports heritage information through publications, displays, exhibits, and the media;”
- “handling all nominations and ensuring that balloting for potential inductees is conducted fairly and without prejudice.”
Inductees are selected under five categories: Athlete Modern, Athlete Legend, Builder/Founder Modern, Builder/Founder Legend, and Team. The number of inductees in any given year shall be at the discretion of the Hall of Fame committee, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of the London Sports Council.
Eligibility criteria include: birthplace, education, developmental years, sports contributions, residence during participation, residence post-participation, other contributions and those identified and associated with London and/or Middlesex County.
The community at large will be asked, normally in the November to February period, to submit nominations for induction into the Hall of Fame. All nominations will be given due consideration by the Hall of Fame committee. The committee’s selections for induction will be presented to the Board of Directors of the London Sports Council for final approval.
The normal practice is to announce the names of inductees for any given year in early May and to hold the official induction ceremony in early November.
